Job Purpose
Maximize CRASK through the strategic management of fare class availability and overbooking profiles. The Inventory Manager will be responsible for balancing forecasted demand with seat capacity to ensure each seat is sold at the optimal price point, minimizing spoilage while protecting inventory for high-yield passengers.
The inventory management manager reports to the Head of Revenue Generation.
Main Accountabilities
· Fare Class Inventory Control: Manage and optimize the availability of all fare buckets across assigned routes to maximize Revenue per Available Seat Kilometer.
· Overbooking Strategy Implementation: Define and monitor overbooking profiles based on historical no-show data and cancellation patterns to minimize spoilage while controlling denied boarding costs.
· Demand Forecasting: Analyze historical booking trends, seasonality, and market events to develop accurate demand forecasts that drive inventory opening/closing decisions.
· Yield & Load Factor Optimization: Balance the trade-off between filling the aircraft (Load Factor) and achieving the highest possible average fare (Yield).
· Market & Competitive Monitoring: Track competitor inventory moves and pricing actions to adjust availability tactics in real-time, ensuring the airline remains competitive and captures market share.
· Performance Reporting & KPIs: Monitor and report on key performance indicators such as CRASK, Yield, Load Factor, and Sell-up rates to identify revenue leakage or growth opportunities.
· Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Pricing team to ensure fare structures align with inventory availability and coordinate with Sales/Marketing on tactical promotions for low-demand periods.
Main Responsibilities - Tasks
· Inventory Control Execution: Perform daily reviews of flight performance and adjust fare class availability (buckets) based on real-time demand shifts.
· Overbooking Management: Fine-tune overbooking levels for specific flights or dates to compensate for expected no-shows and cancellations.
· System Calibration: Configure and maintain the Revenue Management System (RMS) parameters (e.g., business rules, influence factors, seasonalities, and demand triggers).
· Promotion Support: Implement inventory tactics for tactical sales and marketing campaigns to stimulate demand in low-occupancy periods.
· Post-Departure Analysis: Conduct "was-it-right" meetings to analyze flight closing results and improve future forecasting accuracy.
Skills & Experience
Technical / Hard Skills:
Data Analysis & Statistics: Proficiency in interpreting complex data sets, trends, and probability models.
GDS & RMS Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of Global Distribution Systems (Amadeus, Sabre) and RM software (PROS, Air RM).
Advanced Excel/BI: Ability to create and propose dashboards and models (SQL, Tableau, or Power BI are highly valued).
Economic Acumen: Deep understanding of Price Elasticity, Yield Management, and Airline Economics.
Soft Skills:
Decisiveness: Ability to make high-stakes decisions quickly in a fast-paced environment.
Strategic Thinking: Looking beyond a single flight to understand the impact on the entire network.
Effective Communication: Translating complex data into actionable insights for the Sales and Pricing teams.
Strategic Proactivity: High level of initiative to anticipate market trends and adjust inventory strategies ahead of the competition. Ability to identify demand shifts before they impact booking curves, implementing corrective inventory actions to capture early-bird revenue.
Continuous Improvement: Proactively seeking ways to refine forecasting models and overbooking parameters rather than maintaining the status quo.
Team Leadership & Mentoring: Responsible for coaching a team of Inventory Analysts, fostering a data-driven culture, and ensuring professional growth within the RM department.
Key Performance Indicators:
RASK (Revenue per Available Seat Kilometer): The primary metric to measure the overall financial efficiency and profitability of the assigned seat inventory.
Yield (Average Fare): Measures the average amount paid per passenger per kilometer to ensure volume isn't being prioritized at the expense of value.
Load Factor (LF): The percentage of available seating capacity that is filled with passengers, aiming for the "sweet spot" between high occupancy and high yield.
Forecast Accuracy (MAPE): The precision of demand projections; a lower Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) indicates more reliable inventory opening/closing decisions.
Denied Boarding (DB) Rate & Costs: Measuring the impact of overbooking strategies to ensure the cost of "bumping" passengers does not exceed the revenue gained from the extra sales.
No-Show Ratio Accuracy: The variance between predicted and actual passenger no-shows, used to fine-tune future overbooking profiles
Time-to-Market: The speed at which the manager and their team respond to competitor pricing actions or sudden shifts in market demand.
